When you walk through the maze of rooms at the Pestana Palace, you feel a little bit like royalty, or at least you could pretend to be. Though not as shiny as it should be, it’s easy to imagine the riches and splendor that once thrived here. Built in the late 19th Century, the Palace of the Marquis of Valle Flor was modeled after his French home and has now been converted into a 5-star hotel where Prince and Madonna stay when they are in town. It’s quiet, with a luscious tropical garden, a fabulous swimming pool and thirteen royal suites. I stayed in the new wing, that’s more modern, but you still get that old world feeling, when you’re having breakfast in the ball room for example, or greeted at the front desk by bell boys in proper uniforms and hats. But in the end the Palace is just a beautiful place, away from the hordes of tourists in the city, where you can cool off and be a princess.
Many thanks to Leonor Costa for her hospitality.
